Long COVID

Dr. Lakshmi Deepa Yerram is a Family Medicine Physician and the Chief Medical Officer at International Community Health Services. In this lesson, Dr. Deepa presents on Long COVID – the symptoms, prevention, and how to support patients and family members experiencing Long COVID.

Key takeaways:

  1. There are several treatments that can be taken to minimize COVID systems. Most of these treatments must be taken as soon as possible after symptoms start, and ideally within 5 days of symptom onset.
  2. The best way to prevent long COVID is not getting COVID. It’s important to continue preventative measures such as: getting vaccinated, wearing a mask, ventilating indoor spaces, and self-isolating if a person develops symptoms
  3. Causes of long COVID are not yet known, but several proposed theories are residual organ damage, remaining virus, or exaggerated immune response
  4. There are a range of symptoms associated with long COVID
  5. There currently are no FDA approved treatments for long COVID, however medications can be taken to reduce symptoms.
