Playground Safety

Key takeaways:

  1. Playground safety is important to prevent serious injuries, but at the same time playgrounds are meant to challenge children to take risks within their own abilities. We want children to grow physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively.
  2. The point of playground safety is to reduce life-threatening and debilitating injuries. We don’t want to remove all risk, but we do want to remove hazards unknown to children.
  3. A leading cause of death on playgrounds is when a child becomes tangled with equipment, particularly around the neck. Falls are the top cause of injuries
  4. Park conditions and the way the park was designed play into the safety during use.
  5. Supervision is critical for ensuring children are using playgrounds safely
