CHW stories in the pandemic

Sabina, a Community Access Specialist at International Community Health Services, reflects on her time working as a CHW during the pandemic – the hardships, obstacles overcome, and patients she helped connected to critically needed resources during a difficult time. Sabina encourages other CHW to reflect on their work and the important role they’ve played in patient’s lives.

Key Takeaways

  1. Community Health Workers (CHWs) have played and continue to play a critical role during the pandemic
  2. CHWs serve as a bridge to connect patients/clients to health and social services
  3. CHWs have supported patients through challenging situations: lost jobs, losing family members due to COVID-19, mental health challenges and isolation.
  4. CHWs overcame challenges of having to quickly adjust to working with limited resources, staffing changes, burnout, and some remote work
  5. There are now many virtual tools to support CHW workflow
